Much like Scooby Doo, my cats seem to find themselves in strange and dangerous adventures from time to time. It's good that my wife and kids come along to investigate, otherwise they might be lost in space, frozen in an iceberg, or possibly end up as shark bait... Zoinks!

For this project the team at Brand New School took on a massive branding overhaul for Brooks running shoes. My role in the project was to work alongside the CGI team in creating eye-catching visuals to be used across all media types. Often in jobs that mix real photography with CGI, the tough part is integrating all the parts to look as if the whole scene was actually photographed. I worked on adding textures, shadows, blurs, and general retouching tricks to blend them all together realistically. As a photographer with access to gritty NYC streets, I grabbed my camera to capture some tight shots of where the brick walls meet the sidewalk. This helps when your stock image search doesn’t yield the results you want. When needed, I went into a 3D application to render out lighting passes to help relight the talent and integrate into the scene.

The VR world has a competitive scene for headsets so the team over at The Artery wanted to separate the Pico 4 headset from the pack with an eye catching visual. We wanted the user to feel transported from reality into this immersive digital world as if they were actually there. For this minute and a half live action spot, my role was to create style frames and matte-paintings for the virtual reality concert. Using 3D software I created an otherworldly mountain scene to set the stage for a large artificial intelligence concert venue. Using Photoshop, I helped breakout the scene into foreground, midground and background layers to be composited back into the footage by the talented Flame artists at The Artery.

Though these individuals may seem larger than life, they are in fact not hundred foot giants. For this healthcare campaign we wanted our heroes to ‘LivLarge’ and show that they can take hold of their HIV diagnoses. Set globally in several large cities, the photographer Harry Fellows captured a wide variety of beautiful panoramic images. With the rising sun as our unifying element throughout the scenes I integrated the talent into the skylines to appear towering over their environments. The next goal was to unify the buildings with a pink and purple color palette to keep a consistent branding message across the board.

A fun reboot for the classic Halloween tale of the Sanderson Sisters. The Artery was tasked in creating the visual effects for many of the iconic scenes. My role was to add depth to the background forest scene by creating many layers of crooked trees, scraggly brush, and ominous fog. It required many iterations and tweaks to get it just right so that it would complement the lead performances in the foreground.

We were approached by Savannah College of Art and Design in collaboration with Rizzoli Publishing to produce a monograph for the visionary fashion designer Guo Pei. While we were originally familiar with the name in connection to Rihanna’s 2015 Met Gala gown, we quickly became enamored with her work. Looking through her designs was like pulling clothing straight out of Alice in Wonderland, so naturally we went the route of creating fairytale worlds for them to live in. This series of images were used to showcase her delicate craftsmanship as inspiration to the western world. As the creative director and retoucher for HOWL, a traveling photo collective, it was my job to bring these images into the fantasy realm. Over the course of four weeks and thirteen locations in the deep south, HOWL Collective created 130 original images to be used in her first published monograph.

The concept for this project was to show how these patients can be freed up to live more of their lives. Often they feel limited in what they can and can’t do because of their condition so we wanted to represent an ‘unboxing’ of their full potential. The TJ team went to CG as there were a lot of different scenarios to showcase. This allowed for more flexibility in the height, angle and lighting for each individual scene. To speed up the process, the scenes were rendered in lower fidelity so that the details could be added in retouch. Swapping out the clothes, adding textures and sometimes even replacing plants helped create a smooth transition from conception to completion.

Back by popular demand, the Toyota Supra GR86 (alongside the Corolla) is making a splash among car enthusiasts. “We created concept art to capture the tone of a "perfect storm." We experimented with the bottle caught up in the elements of earth, wind, water, and fire, to find the perfect, striking image. We spent a lot of time trying to find the right balance between energy, details and legibility as well as how we transition from earth, leaves, wind and clouds as we moved up the bottle. Each element had to seamlessly blend into the next. Gold suggests premium quality, luxury, and a calm after a storm. We looked to images of gold particles, dust and shimmers, and even award statuettes for our mood board.”

The highly skilled CGI team at TJ rendered a detailed forest to showcase the targeted areas of the brain that the disease effects. This project was a labor of love for me. I had come across Romain Laurent's 'Tilt' series and wanted to see if I could give my own twist to it. With access to an infinite array of stock photography I scoured the web for the right imagery to help tell the story of an individual casually walking amidst a major natural disaster. My wife has a knack for staying poised in chaotic situations, even apocalyptic ones, so she was the perfect candidate. Hold on end of the world, this text must be sent!

Since this was an insurance advert about being safe on site, the photographer took ultimate precaution to ensure a safety of the talent by utilizing CGI. Our artist rendered out several photo-real variations of the broken tiles to give the feeling that the tiles had just smashed into the ground with high impact. In combination with some atmospherics and post production effects we were able to turn what would have been a very dangerous and difficult shoot into a simple and efficient project.

The challenging part of this large citywide campaign was creating an actionable typeface that was both customizable and extremely high resolution. Using photoshop brushes, textures, and layer styles, I put together an action set that would output unique non-repeating letters for any given phrase (which was especially important since they were using dozen of taglines). In combination with the clever portraits shot by Jason Leiva, the campaign was unleashed throughout New York City to showcase that even the pickiest reviewers still enjoyed VitaCoco.

The brisk autumn air fathers the mist rising from the warm waters of the lake beneath my boat. It consumes me. Engulfs my sight, hugging me like a blanket as my silver tin vessel slices through the surf. With each push of the oars I can hear the twisting of metal, the wood slapping against the water, and the drips toiling at the surface as I pull them back through the air. I push on. Through the wet morning dew, heading towards the ripe trees splashed with golden colors. Vibrant colors or red, yellow, burnt orange, yet on this blue morning diluted through the fog, are no more than a distant haze.

“BHGE is the world's leading supplier of equipment and services to oil and gas companies. To celebrate the 1 year anniversary of Baker Hughes joining the GE Brand, the team developed the number ‘1’ formed from all the elements that make up their company. We used a photo real 3D workflow to create the main asset, then off to our creative retoucher to take the image to unbelievable places. After we animated the scene and composited the image back together to create gifs and video loops for their corporate website. Finally, we used html video and coded hot spots over the top of the scene so the viewer can find out more about the special areas of this image.”

“Linda Boff, CMO of GE, came to us with a challenge. She wanted to build a campaign that touched on the impacts of GE. In support of this, the team at Little Red Robot came up with many highly visually, design driven ideas. Once we honed on in shadow boxes to add together to create a moving image we set out to create something amazing with the opportunity at hand. We at first illustrated the concept by hand and then we sent it to our 3D team who modeled everything in photo real 3D. Once rendered, our creative CGI retoucher jumped in detailing and texturing. Once the look was baked, it went back to 3D team for animation. Then to a Houdini visual effects workflow to create water sim, smoke, clouds, fire. All added together by a compositor in Nuke. Finally interactive development begins. We opted to code over html video, so that when a viewer touched anywhere, contextual info would appear. The campaign was deployed on all GE social media outlets driving users to the interactive experience at GE.com.”

I was approached by Chris with a fun and cheeky project that I couldn't resist. The idea to juxtapose historical context of the old with the new. Starting from a photograph, I helped to transform the images from hipster-chic to old world relic complete with antique frame and kitschy etching "OMG BFF LOL FML U AWAKE? <3". The process of of taking a photo-real image and morphing it back into a representative oil painting only added to it's cheekiness.

Located in the heart of Philly, the beaux-arts Atlantic Building underwent a much needed face lift. Once the headquarters to the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company, it's now reopening its doors to the commercial real estate world. To commemorate the grand opening of the newly renovated building, Creative Soldier partnered with Tony Notarberardino and myself to bring this campaign to life by linking its past history to its current form.
I was brought in to facilitate the process of blending CGI with photography. As with most real estate imagery, we were working with highly detailed 3D CAD data of the building's blueprints. So it was imperative to match up the photography with the CGI rendered scenes while incorporating the ensemble of dust-bowl era characters. While on set, I worked alongside Tony to make sure we stayed consistent in our camera angle, lensing, lighting direction, and 1920's vibes.

"The black abyss, it beckoned me. To fly a starship across the universe divide. It promised me things no human had ever beheld before. It lured me from the downy comfort of my life. Pulled me from the love of my life and Earthly things I held close. I believed with divine certainty that the far off pin pricks held something for me.
I was wrong.
It all went wrong. Yet here I am. Alone and forsaken to wander this dark and desolate planet of origins unknown. I’m the sole ambassador to human life on this rock. With each encumbered step, I yearn for light. To find the fusion warmth of another star.
I know it exists, for there’s life here, not unlike the life on our own planet. If only I had company, I could carry on, even with a sense of normalcy. So much of what lies in my view recalls a memory of my former life, each with their own calibrated stab of pain.
Then there was light. It fell at my feet at first and led me across to a world more like the one I knew and loved, and left. The golden cast came as if it was late. Rushing through the boulders and crags, setting me on a trajectory towards its origins.
In the immediate distance, ice breaks off into the rivers below; floating past like flotsam on a river’s surface after a hard rain. The rains are steady here. Not the hard driving kind like you find on a summer’s afternoon in Georgia where the road ends in water. More like what you could encounter in a valley deep in the Cascades at the top of a lake. A persistent release of inconsequential droplets that as a whole provide a profound affect on the landscape for it is red here. All races of red. I hadn’t known the subtleties of the hue back home.
A week of rain and the world glitters with jewels of atmospheric perspiration. A kaleidoscope of tiny highlights and pin pricks of light that parallels the stars. The stars that promised so much and gave only a sentence of wandering in return.
I know eventually it’s all for not. I’ll consume the last of what keeps me alive—the atmospheric filters and the remainder of my nutrient. That’ll be the end to this cul-de-sac quest. Only today I caught myself floating in a soup of thoughts, of sliding the safety and unlatching my visor and for a brief and final moment feeling the alien air hit my face.
I find comfort in this. One final outbound sentence into the black abyss."

In large, humans have a need to believe in something bigger, something more meaningful. Such religious connotations often surface to help fill that void and connect us to a higher power. However, with the arrival of the modern society, religion and faith have taken on entirely new contexts. It is now hard to disseminate between stories of divine spiritual interventions and encounters with the supernatural. No longer are such stories accepted at face value but rather are questioned on authenticity. It is this dissemination between truth and uncertainty, which have caused much turmoil in our world’s longstanding history.

"Subaru - Dueling Imprezas
Once the material was captured on location, our artists worked on it back at the studio to create the text coming out of the sand, billowing from behind the cars. We built up multiple layers of dirt, grime and dust to form the basic shape the clouds and then selectively lightened and darkened the dust to form the tagline for the campaign - adding shadows to ground everything onto the flat desert. We then worked on the overall color and master files ready to take across high resolution print and digital banner adverts."

"The Earth has seen its fair share of changes since the beginning of time: shifting continents, ice ages, dry spells, rise and fall of civilizations. However the world is young and must adapt to the ever-changing environment. Whether good or bad, mankind plays a huge role in the future of this third planet from the sun. The following images are all shot of the same location in southern France but processed to represent the past, present and possible near future of the Luberon Valley."

"Nissan - Electrimonials
TBWA came to TaylorJames to create a multi-platform campaign for out of home, print and web. This project is so special because stock doesn’t exist at the size and scale and therefore many painful hours in CGI were needed to make this happen."
